What Are Health Supplements


They include vitamins, minerals, herbs, antioxidants, amino acids and enzymes.

The word supplement means "in addition to."


In addition to what...?

In addition to food.

That's right, health supplements can't take the place of food... you must eat. Health supplements are designed to "supplement" the nutrition you get from food.

But Don't I Get All the Health Supplements I Need From the Foods I Eat?

Great question! Some folks do - many do not.

Are you one of those who religiously reads labels? Do you make sure you get your seven servings of fruits and vegetables every day?

Please don't admit that you are one of those who thinks the nutritional pyramid sits out in the middle of the Egyptian Desert?

Do you dine out? Do you smoke? Do you drink? Are you stressed? Do you have a hectic lifestyle... always on the go?

Are you a vegetarian? Do you get enough sunlight? Do you have children? Are you an adolescent? Are you over 50?

Are you a women of child bearing age? Any family history of a chronic disease? Are you an athlete or a weekend warrior type?

Fact is, if you pay strict attention to what you eat and do not have one or more of the lifestyles or life situations listed above, you may not need health supplements. 

However, when the Harvard School of Public Health states that the...

"intake of several vitamins above the minimum daily requirement may prevent heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, and other chronic diseases,"

... who are we to argue.

Also, an article appearing in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) had this to say: "…suboptimal intake of some vitamins, above levels causing classic vitamin deficiency, is a risk factor for chronic diseases and common in the general population..."


In addition, the JAMA went on to say, "Most people do not consume an optimal amount of all vitamins by diet alone. Pending strong evidence of effectiveness from randomized trials, it appears prudent for all adults to take vitamin supplements."
